I encountered a group of people who confuse and concern me. I didn’t know that they were of this particular type when we first met. As a matter of fact I thought they were quite different than they are but after an eye opening conversation at work I’ve come to realise that maybe the people I work with are far more different from me than I realised.
You see, half of the people in my office…don’t have hobbies.
Insane, right?
Some might say, impossible, but trust me I grilled them to within an inch of their patience and my life. What do they do when they get home? What about on the weekends?
The closest one of them came to having a hobby was watching Netflix and scrolling through Tiktok.
I threw out option after option; gaming, puzzles, arts and crafts, knitting, reading, sports.
Nothing.
Now, I had to clarify to my work mates that I wasn’t bagging them out, I was just genuinely confused. What do people who don’t have hobbies do?
Wake up, go to work, go home, sleep. That’s pretty much it. There’s eating in there as well and scrolling social media, but nothing more beyond that and I’ve a little concerned for their wellbeing.
I get being so tired when you get home that you just want to lay on the couch and veg. I myself have spent many an afternoon rewatching a show I’ve seen a hundred times just waiting for an appropriate time to go to bed so I can start all over again the next day.
But every single night?
Some people might consider that an early sign of depression.
Look I’m riddled with anxiety and spend three days after any social event rethinking every single thing I did or didn’t say so I’m not here to judge.
I just need to know, as someone who has too many hobbies, and surrounded by other people who have very time consuming hobbies. How does one not hobby?
It’s been over a week since this conversation at work occurred and I’m still absolutely baffled. I’ve asked everyone I’ve encountered over the last week and they’re just as confused. None of us can fathom the idea of not having anything to do.
As of this moment in time I have two arts and crafts projects on the go, a jigsaw that needs to be mounted, working through a video game on two different platforms, four different shows and a Corpse Bride cosplay WIP. It’s not that weird okay. One show is for listening to while I’m busy, one is for helping me get to sleep when I get to squeeze in a nap, one is for the living room and the other is for when I’m sitting at my desk gaming or working while I talk to friends.
Oh and I just started a new book the other day.
I shall not be taking questions on how I multitask so well.
I will however be taking suggestions on what we should do to help these people that have no hobbies. Is there some kind of fundraiser we could start? Is there a telethon for this? If we were to take donations would money be good or should we each donate one of our forgotten hobbies to the cause.
Don’t tell me that there isn’t a candle/soap making kit gathering dust somewhere in your house.
Whoa, you posted this back in Feb??? And I’ve just seen it haha. I totally agree with you- as they say here in WA, ‘Oh, 100%’.
Corpse Bride cosplay?? I love that. Would love to know what video game you’re hooked on. In solidarity, I will now reveal some of my secret hobbies, that I’d only share with something who I truly like. I’m an entertainment junkie and love many TV shows to the point where I can quote lines and would stand a good chance at a trivia night (Friends, Northern Exposure, Brooklyn 99, Psych, Mentalist, Rosemary & Thyme and above all… Time Team). I’m still addicted to Minecraft and have even developed a mildly popular mod that nobody can know is mine (b/c ageism), as well as Disco Elysium, Doom, Stardew Valley, Elder Scrolls. I’m an avid reader (I proudly own the first SJ Smith book, just have to finish my Cleeves first), writer (you can check out my amateurish, fun, sci-fi series at Basso Lib, where it’s miscategorised as Young Adult 😦 ) and collect old pens and pencils. I am a key member of the Woolgathering Society, which I will reveal is a home-brew 2e D&D group. My gosh I’m a big nerd, but that’s me.
